History of the Choir

The Pilsen Children´s Choir was established in 1980 by conductor Hana Friedrichová and pianist Alena Tupá. Since the very beginning the choir has been a renowned Pilsen city choir. It has achieved a lot of certificates and awards at festivals and competitions, has visited Hungary, Poland, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, the USA or Canada.

In 2005 Mgr. Bedřiška Koželuhová became the new choir conductor and the choir was accompanied by pianist Jaroslava Smoláková. The choir cooperated with Ivana Janišová and Jaroslava Šálková. Nowadays it works with the piano accompaniment of Daniela Pytelková. Since 2016 Mgr. Barbora Brůjová has cooperated with the choir.

The main choir consists of about 60 children and youths at the age 12 – 20. It has two preparatory departments – Notičky (The Little Notes) for the 1st to 3rd grades and Javořičky for the 4th to 6th grades. The choir pertains to Bedřich Smetana Art School.

The choir´s repertoire consists of music of all periods, famous musical melodies, folk songs from various countries as well as contemporary composers´ works.  Among others the choir has rehearsed musical Noc na Karlštejně which has been performed at several Pilsen events and in other Czech towns.

For almost 30 years the Pilsen Children´s Choir cooperated with Josef Kajetán Tyl Theatre in Pilsen (until the theatre established its own children choir) and the choir members have appeared in Carmen, Othello, Tosca, The Nutcracker and other productions. The choir has also worked with the Pilsen Philharmonic at cantata Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, performed at a number of concerts for children about J. S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, and B. Martinů. It presented Czech Christmas Mass “Hey, Master!” by J. J. Ryba in 2011 and Martin Hybler´s cycle of Christmas carols Our Beautiful Angels in 2013 and 2014.

Annually the choir organizes Christmas concerts and regularly a part of the proceeds is donated to local charities. Another tradition is spring concerts with both main and preparatory choir departments.
